Garden Cabin Terrace Ideas: Make an Outdoor Fireplace by Yourself (Part 1)

An outdoor fireplace in a garden cabin terrace is a place you can arrange the parties and prepare some food in as well. It is a place which gives you some warmth to enjoy in the colder evenings. Besides its practical side, a fireplace has also a decorative function which is even more important sometimes . So, it is very important to match the fireplace design with the garden log cabin and garden environment.

The materials usually used for the construction of the fireplaces are stones, bricks, concrete blocks or wood (the same as used for a garden cabin construction). As a rule, several materials are combined: special bricks are used to make a chimney while the exterior part of the fireplace is decorated by stones. So, every fireplace made by yourself would be unique, because of the various stones selected for the decorative part and the way you decide to combine them.

Outdoor fireplaces can be either gas fireplaces or wood-burning fireplaces equipped in a garden cabin. Wood-burning fireplaces are more popular because of their simplicity and natural features – the flame, the smell and the sound of the burning wood. However, one of the disadvantages of the wood-burning fireplaces is that they spread a lot of wood smoke. Outdoor gas fireplaces are clearer, as there is no cinder or ash, and safer, however, to install a gas fireplace you’ll have to hire a professional installer.

The Function of an Outdoor Fireplace

A fireplace can function as a place to cook food in, for heating purposes or as a source of lighting. If you use a fireplace for cooking you’ll also need a fireguard which could be taken out when necessary. If the fireplace is going to be used frequently in a garden cabin terrace, it could be made with access from both sides.

It is also advisable to place a small table by fireplace in a log cabin terrace, on which the cooked food can be put. A small table can be made from the same material as a fireplace – stones. Also, don’t forget a small firewood as it is a very practical fireplace part. If a fireplace is going to serve as a part of a recreational activity – it is advisable to leave enough space in front of it to place some chairs or a sofa for example.
