Building a bespoke insulated residence in Breitungen, Germany

What made JULIA the top choice for the family

There are two ways to order a bespoke model – alter a standard model from Quick-garden.co.uk or create a completely new design. In this case, Jan ordered JULIA, which was tweaked to fit his needs. When talking about the advantages of this particular structure, he stresses this:

“I chose my model because it's a low-rise building; everything is at ground level, which made construction easier.”

The necessary extras and Jan’s recommendation

Looking to maximise the value of the new building, the owner included white PVC windows and doors to his order. These accessories also feature triple-glazed windows, which greatly enhance the insulation of the building. However, there is something that just cannot be missed:

“What I definitely recommend is the KfW 40 insulation; the insulation is really good. My energy costs average €25 per month.” – Jan

We always recommend seriously considering insulation whenever you’re eyeing a model meant for residential purposes. It’s important to keep the slow-grown conifer timber dry and well-maintained, which does get easier once the building is more airtight and can retain more warmth. Whichever type of heating you choose will be a lot more efficient, as you can see from Jan’s experience. In this case, he uses an air-to-air heat pump, which contributes to the relatively low energy consumption.

Stakes are high: a DIY project from start to finish

Except plumbing and electricity, that is. Those were completed afterwards by a third party. However, let’s focus on the process – construction started on August 5th, and Jan could move in with his family on September 25th! How come?

Firstly, the foundation was already laid out before starting construction, so that made the process quicker. The utility and sewer lines were already in place as well. The assembly of JULIA itself, gladly, wasn’t difficult. Jan appreciated that all the parts were numbered according to the instructions, which helped him build the structure efficiently. Naturally, he had lots of help – 15 friends, to be exact, at least the first weekend. They built the house up to the start of the roof. Jan finished what was left with a few friends. He recounts that everything was done when he moved in, except some of the exterior, such as the solar panels you can see in the pictures. Truly impressive work!

The overall take

Now that some time has passed, Jan is sure he would choose Quick-garden.co.uk again for another project. He claims to be very satisfied with the house, including the experts he talked to prior to and after ordering the model.
