The Most Popular Myths About Log Cabins

   1.  A Log Cabin Is A House to Spend a Holiday or A Weekend

A wooden building, in fact, can be used as a permanent living space like any cottage, flat or a house made of bricks. Wooden log cabins can also be a very well-equipped, safe, warm and  cozy  place of living; the main difference is the material it is made out of.

   2.  Log Cabins Are Likely to Burn Down

Though, given the right conditions, timber can be flammable, as a rule it is treated with non-combustible materials, while (God forbid) if somebody decides to burn your house down, it will make be no difference if it is a wooden or a brick house.

   3.  A Wooden House Will Not Last for Long

Forget about old log cabins. Today, in the days of advanced modern technologies, your wooden house could serve you for 100-200 years. For example, in Norway there are wooden houses which have been used for 600 years and are still in use today. Nowadays there are myriad wood protective materials, preservers, and a wide range of paints and varnishes; it just remains for you to care for the cabin in the same way as you take care of your clothes, footwear or flat.

4. Timber As A Construction Material Has A Lot of Disadvantages

As with every material timber has its disadvantages, which are the consequences of its natural origin. The sturdiness of timber and its thermo resistance depend very much upon its homogeneity. The homogeneous nature of the timber is not only affected during the growth of tree, but also during the process of storing, drying, processing and using timber and timber items. During the drying process, the linear elements of timber do not change evenly and due to this, some splits in the internal structure of the wood as well as warping might appear. Another problem of timber is its contraction/expansion qualities. When the log cabin is assembled from timber that has not been dried, the height can shrink by 4-5cm per 1 metre. The things that cause most damage and which cannot be allowed are the following: rot, cracks in the joining places, and bark beetles. Moreover, the timber in the middle of the trees is usually the weakest and most prone to rotting. Other disadvantages of timber include its potential flammability and a risk that it will be damaged by wood-boring beetles.

However, modern technologies mitigate the risk of these timber weakening effects on all  log cabins and other wooden buildings to an absolute minimum. So, to avoid any problems in connection with the disadvantageous features of timber, it is highly advisable to choose reliable specialists.
